Functional Movement Coaching

Functional Movement Coaching is about helping you move more naturally and efficiently in everyday life.

Whether you’re looking to make everyday movements feel easier, enhance athletic performance, or refine a regular practice like Yoga, Pilates or dance, this approach focuses on improving your body’s natural movement patterns, so you can move with less effort, more confidence, and reduced risk of injury.

What Is Functional Movement Training?

Functional movement training involves exercises and sequences that mimic real-world activities, using multiple joints and planes of motion. These movements are designed to help you perform everyday tasks with greater ease and efficiency. Some examples of functional movements include:

  • Walking / Running
  • Pushing
  • Pulling
  • Jumping
  • Bending
  • Squatting
  • Sitting down and standing up
  • Tying shoes
  • Picking something up off the floor

Why is Functional Movement Training Important?

Functional movement training offers numerous benefits for your overall health and well-being:

  • Injury Prevention: By using natural movement patterns, functional movement training improves balance, coordination, and stability, reducing the risk of injury.
  • Overall Fitness: These movements engage multiple muscles at once, helping you improve strength, endurance, and flexibility.
  • Efficiency: Functional movement training makes everyday tasks easier and more efficient, saving you energy and reducing strain.
How I Incorporate Functional Movements into Your Journey

I integrate functional movement techniques into my other movement modalities, such as Yoga, Pilates, and Nordic Walking – so that you can apply what you learn straight away into your day-to-day life. Additionally, functional movement principles are embedded in my Therapeutic Bodywork sessions, providing a holistic approach to improving both mobility and recovery. Whether in group classes or one-on-one sessions, functional movement techniques are seamlessly integrated to enhance your body’s performance and overall well-being.

Frequently Asked Questions - Movement Coaching

Myofascia is the connective tissue system (fascia) that supports and contains every muscle of the body. Fascia binds cells into tissue, tissue to organs, organs into systems, connects muscles to bones, wraps every nerve, every vessel, laces all internal structures into place, and envelopes the body as a whole … every part of us is in its embrace.

My work directly addresses physical symptoms, postural or performance concerns, or general self care. It can provide:

  • Freedom from persistent aches and pains
  • Injury prevention and speedier injury recovery
  • Relief from tension and stress
  • Freedom of movement
  • Improved alignment and balance
  • Increased body awareness
  • Relaxation and rejuvenation
  • Balanced breathing
  • Improved performance

A thorough understanding of whole body posture and movement patterns guides me in the techniques I use to meet YOUR needs.

Each session starts with a check-in that includes the observation of your movement pattern  through the whole body, not just focusing on the ‘problem or pain spot’. Injury, trauma, posture or movement habits can affect the body in unique ways and the knock on effects can often be felt some distance away as discomfort or pain.

While I work on your fascia you will be asked to participate through movements of your body. Most of the work is completed on a treatment table, however with Active Fascial Release work you will be upright and moving as I work your soft tissues.

If movement training is called for we will identify and develop appropriate exercises together that help support the work from the session and which you can fit into your daily life.

Unlike massage, you will be moving around more, so many clients wear gym shorts, undergarments, sports bras for women, etc.

Please choose clothing that leaves the back, legs, arms and other areas available for work but comfort is the primary consideration.

If you prefer, treatments can be done through clothes.

Movement re-education can be part of the session – wear comfortable clothes for that.

Movement advice and coaching can be part of the session to help integrate the effects of the bodywork into daily life outside the bodywork sessions. Movements may relate to daily activities, sports, dance or other movement modalities you follow with emphasis being given to functional movements.

Homework exercises can be provided to help increase your awareness and any changes you are trying to achieve.
